What would you do / where would you go

I%26#39;ll be in the Ely area for week and was wondering about some different day trips. No I%26#39;m not talking about heading up into the Boundary Waters [I%26#39;m getting out on the water and into the woods]. I%26#39;m thinking more like a road trip vaction. Drive out in the morning and back in the evening.

Does anyone have any good ideas. I like history. Trying out interesting place to eat. Shopping in interesting shops. Seeing new places and new things.

What would you do / where would you go

I know the Wolf Center in Ely is pretty impressive -

The underground mine at Tower/Soudan is an experience -

If you%26#39;d like to venture down to Lake Superior - several parks / trails / waterfalls are o%26#39;plenter.

About 60 min drive each way.

What would you do / where would you go

Hey vtmom13

Check out : …state.mn.us/state_parks/…index.html

or better known as The Soudan Mine. If you like history it%26#39;s a cool page out of our Iron Ore connection from the past. Enjoy!

Hey Downtown-

sorry- didnt read your post very well, you already covered the mine...

Drive to Voyageurs NP and take a boat tour to the historic Kettle Falls Hotel.

I would always recommend a trip along the North Shore if you haven%26#39;t been there before. You just take Hwy 1 (lots of curves for part of it) to Hwy 61. South on Hwy 61 you could visit Split Rock Lighthouse, built in 1910 with its 1920s era quarters. North on Hwy 61 is my favorite town of Grand Marais with several shops and restaurants. You could easily visit all those places in a day along with having Lake Superior views the entire way.

In Ely I also recommend the Wolf Center. On Monday the two wolf pups (my photo is of them taken about 6 weeks ago) joined the pack.

All of the responses are right on the money. But, you should take the time to explore the many unique shops/stores in Ely.

Also go west to the Fortune Bay Casino. Lake Vermillion is very pretty.

We spent our 30th anniversary there 13 yrs. ago. Very nice then.

I think a drive to Grand Marais would be a good option. It has many neat little shops, like Ely has and it wouldn%26#39;t be too hard to get to in a day.
