Driving from Minneapolis to Yellowstone

One of my friends and his wife in their early sixties are planning to drive from Minneapolis to Yellowstone National Park. Unfortunaltely he doesn%26#39;t have a computer and I was requested to post this message. Could anyobe give them some tips on sites to visit and travelliong times because they have only avbout 6 days to do the trip.

Thank you.

Driving from Minneapolis to Yellowstone

From Minneapolis to Gardiner, MT, the north entrance to Yellowstone Park, is over 1000 miles. I%26#39;m in my mid-50%26#39;s and consider that two very long days of driving. It takes that much to drive back too, using up 4 of their 6 days. Please tell them to reconsider this short of time to drive all the way to Yellowstone. I drove from northern Minnesota to Yellowstone last year and took 11 days and still felt a bit rushed.

Driving from Minneapolis to Yellowstone

IMO 6 days is not enough. You need at least 6 days inside Yellowstone just to see the main sights. They will miss spending time at the sights on the route...Corn Palace, Badland National Park, Wind Cave, Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park etc... Perhaps they should reconsider and just do the Black Hills. It%26#39;s only a one day drive and tons of things to see and do. Custer State Park alone is filled with loads of wildlife viewing and hiking. If they decide to go, maybe they should fly into Jackson, WY and rent a car. That would be doable.

It is a short time but it can be done. When I was a kid, we drove through Yellowstone in 1 day but you stop to see old faithful and that%26#39;s about it. It takes a good 2 days to drive to Yellowstone from Minneapolis. Is there anyway they can fly in closer to Yellowstone? Montana? Rapid City,SD? Or even Bismarck, ND? I live in Bismarck and its a good day%26#39;s drive to Yellowstone and it takes 7 hours to Minneapolis. You can take I-94 right from Minneapolis and straight across to Montana and then go down to Yellowstone...when you come back out, drive back through South Dakota and either go over to grab I-35 or go up I-29 in SD to I-94 and take the same route through Minnesota to get back to Minneapolis.

Last Oct. on the way home form our son%26#39;s wedding in Seattle we spent a few days at Chico Hot Springs...just north of the park. We only spent a day in YNP and only managed to see two major areas (Yellowstone Falls and Mammoth Hot Springs - the only unseen areas from prior visits). It would have taken at least a day more to add geysers and maybe Yellowstone Lake and even then it would be rushed.

As for the drive....we drove home in one shot from Chico. Straight through - I-90 to I-35 then north to Mpls/St. Paul. It was grueling...especially because my wife does not drive. On the other hand it was almost all freeway and with a little fudging of the speed limit mostly 80mph all the way. That%26#39;s about 14 hours of continuous driving - set the cruise control and roll the miles. With two drivers it would actually not be too bad and would allow more time at Yellowstone. Or split the difference and allow two days for the return via a more scenic route (Cody-Bighorns to freeway at Sheridan) and spend one night in the Black Hills. Splitting it up on the way back (after being tired from touristing) would be safer too.

We are in our mid 60%26#39;s and were at Yellowstone 3 yrs. ago. We live in central Minnesota.

I agree with all the above responses. Six days is not enough.

The town of West Yellowstone is a day alone. In the park, Artists Point and both upper %26amp; lower falls are a day. Travel around ';God%26#39;s country'; and enjoy nature the way it was intended. You%26#39;ll never forget it.

Medora is a ';cool'; old western town in western ND. Along with the badlands.

Much to see %26amp; do..take the time.
