I have a few questions. I have been to Duluth Twice and stayed once at the South Pier and once at Soglimt Lighthouse Suite. I loved staying in Canal District right on the water it was wonderful. This year we plan on taking the kids with us, previously it was for our anniversary adults only. We want to stay some where that is close to the water preferably right on the water, and a cabin would be great. We want to stay someplace nice yet somewhat reasonable we don%26#39;t want to really spend more than $150-200 a night. Any suggestions? We wouldn%26#39;t mind staying up the north shore maybe even Two Harbors area for the right price and accomodations.
Also we were thinking of coming up in May to get the off peak prices however I%26#39;m thinking it might be too cold in May to really be comforatable?? Should we just wait and come in July/August? We want to take the kids on the Train up the North Shore and possibly do the Vista Fleet tours. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sometimes it seems too cold in July and August. Lake Superior is deep and it stays pretty cold all summer so that nice warm southerly breeze becomes a very chilly wind. I%26#39;d wait until at least mid-June rather than go in May.
I live about 150 miles west and remember one fishing opener in mid-May when Lake Bemidji finally melted the night before.

I also can vouch for the fact that sometimes there is still ice on the lake in May, so if your kids are planning on playing in the water, you might want to hold off until July or August.
The weather can be very changeable in May, running from cold and wet to warm and sunny. Bring layers. (Of course that%26#39;s also true in July and August!) You can definitely miss some of the tourists in May. Although all the destinations and attractions should be open, some of them, such as the Vista fleet, don%26#39;t ramp up to their full schedule until after Memorial day.
Staying right in canal park is nice, because everyting is in walking distance. I usaully stay at the Hampton or Superior Inn, but their is a new one too i cant remember the name of they just built.
If you want more a cabin farther up the shore, thier will be less for your kids to do. But I would suggest cove point lodge, or grand superior lodge.
I would really recomend staying in canal park though cause you have the depot, the irving ship, the maritime museum, and many other kid friendly things right within a few miles.
Also if its a nice day, dont miss heading out to canal point, head straight over the lift bridge and keep on going. Miles and miles of sandy beach to relax on, and sometimes it can be quite warm in the spring. No smimming yet, but deffinatly a fun place to spend on the beach, flying kites, throwing around a frisbee or reading a book.
sorry i was wrong, its park point not canal point, opps!
BlueFin Bay in Tofte is nice, but may be pricey.
AmericInn is across the street - better rates, free breakfast, but not Lake View.
You might try some places in Grand Marais - fun town.
