Birch Terrace Supper Club

This restaurant is not listed in the directory for Grand Marais, but I simply had to share my terrible experience with this awful establishment.

Our party of four arrived at 6:20 one Friday evening as we were traveling to Duluth. They refused to serve us dinner as they claimed that it was too late and that the kitchen closed just after 6 for supper orders. We were offered a small menu of mainly cold or microwaved dishes, comparable to what you%26#39;d find in a sophisticated vending machine, marked up considerably of course.

I understand that timelines must be followed, but when the restaurant only had one other party of three, I can%26#39;t believe that they would not re-open the kitchen for another run of meals, especially when it would more than double the volume that they had served for dinner.

Do yourself a favor, keep driving when you see the Birch Terrace Supper Club on the righthand side of the highway, a more pleasent meal can be found in the deli section of a Holiday gase bar.

Birch Terrace Supper Club

It%26#39;s unfortunate that you weren%26#39;t able to arrive in time for dinner- this establishment normally has excellent food and great service.

Gently spoken, when a kitchen has closed, it is closed. The amount of work required to re-open a kitchen isn%26#39;t small. Staff has to stay late to clean up (again) and rush to get whatever tasks were supposed to be done before closing time, as well.

I understand your frustration. IMHO, it would be worth it to give this restaurant another chance.

Birch Terrace Supper Club

The Birch Terrace is a long established resaurtant in Grand Marais. I have had many very good meals there. In a tourist town such as Grand Marais, keeping the staff happy by letting them go when they were scheduled to leave, is often much more profitable, in the long run, than keeping them for a table of 4.

I really don%26#39;t don%26#39;t understand the last negative post, you arrived 20 minutes after the kitchen was closed, leave no post, or a neutral post, but save a negative post for a truly bad experience.

Do yourself a favor and have a dinner at a great restaurant, The Birch Terrace.

My wife and I had a amazing time last weekend up on the North Shore celebrating our first anniversary. We were up there for 4 days and chose to dine our final night, in celebration of our 1st, at the Birch Terrace Supper Club.

Now, I had read the above posting before choosing BTSC, and did call ahead to ask specifically how long the kitchen was open, which was the same as the restaurant: until 8PM. (They were actually a little puzzled at my question.)

I think our dear friend above might have stopped at the bar, which is also housed in the same building, but has no interior connection to the Supper Club dinning area. (The kitchen is on the opposing side of the dinning area, as far from the bar as possible.) The bar is the entrance nearest the road.

Anyway, dinner at the Birch Terrace Supper Club was the best meal of trip, by far, and we ate out every meal. The service was excellent (My wife and I separately noted the extremely hard working staff.), the chef came out and asked us about the food, and gave us a free dessert.

I had steak and fish combo, and so did my wife but with different sides. We also had the artichoke dip and fresh french bread appetizer, which, I might add, is worth the stop all by itself. (I could eat it straight, like hotdish, it was that good.)

Ambiance was perfect, the BTSC is a registered historical site, and the dinning area is the main hall / king-size living room, with a large and roaring fireplace at one end, and a view of Grand Marais Harbor (and Lake Superior) at the other.

I would give this place 4 stars!
