What to do in Chisholm, MN
Chisolm is in the iron mining area of Minnesota, so much of its history is about mines and mining. Chisolm hosts both Ironworld and the Museum of Mining. There are mine viewing areas in Virginia, MN and Hibbing. Both have displays of the mining equipment. To the north and south of Chisolm, much of the land is forested and quite wild.
A bit farther to the northeast are the towns of Tower and Sudan, home to the only underground state park in Minnesota. In this area the vein of iron ore was narrow and deep, but rich enough to encourage underground mining. You can take a tour of this underground mine if you wish. Bring a jacket, it is pretty cool down in the mine.
Hibbing is also the home of the Greyhound Museum. This bus company was the start of cross country bus transportation. http://www.greyhoundbusmuseum.org/
A nice listing of what is available in Hibbing can be found at www.hibbing.mn.us/index.asp…
What to do in Chisholm, MN
What brings you to Hibbing and Chisholm? Shopping- there is a mall in Virginia and a real big mall in Duluth if you could get there. Don%26#39;t know what else to tell you. What other interests do you have? For a drink you could go to the Slovenski Dom in downtown Chisholm!!
Hallo!
If you are going to be in Hibbing, try to stop at the Hibbing High School. The school is beautiful and the auditorium is a delight! Construction of Hibbing High School was started in 1920. The cost of the building was roughly $3,900,000. Today it would cost over $50 million to replace.
The ceiling on the main floor and in the auditorium is all hand molded, an art now obsolete. The majority of it was done by Irish craftsmen. The auditorium, with its cut glass chandeliers ($15,00 each in 1920) from Czechoslovakia and Barton vaudeville organ (installed in 1923 and one of two left in the country), was designed after the old Capitol Theater of New York, now out of existence.
Also in Hibbing: View the biggest operating open pit iron ore mine in the world, more than three miles long, two miles wide and 535 feet deep. This man-made ';Grand Canyon of the North'; was the first strip mine on the Mesabi Iron Range. The amazing view continues to grow as the Hibbing Taconite Company Mine expands its mining operations. Rotary drills, 33-cubic-yard shovels and 240-ton production trucks can been seen in action at this National Historic Site. Occasionally, you%26#39;ll be able to witness a mining dynamite blast used to clear bedrock away to get to the iron ore.
Chisholm has a wonderful Interpretive Center that gives you information about settlers in the area. It%26#39;s closed on Mondays. Be sure to take the trolley and go back in time to a historic location. Check it out online at www.ironworld.com.
Check out Hibbing High School that was built in 1920 with iron mining money. The beautiful auditorium is a sight to see! It%26#39;s something that you won%26#39;t want to miss. The Iron World Interpretive Center in Chisholm is interesting and tells about the settlers in the area. There is a lot of history in that area of settlers from all over the world coming together to mine the iron. Hibbing%26#39;s original town needed to move and city hall has photos and stories of moving the town to it%26#39;s current location.
