week end trip from Minneapolis

Visiting son for a week, would like to go somewhere over Father%26#39;s Day weekend. Thinking of Duluth, North Shore drive. Any suggestions appreciated.

week end trip from Minneapolis

Duluth and the North Shore are fabulous depending on your interests. Duluth is a very scenic interesting town to visit. If you like to hike there are several great Minnesota State Parks with their own unique things to see, Gooseberry Falls, Tettegouche, Split Rock Lighthouse to name a few. We enjoy staying north of Duluth in the Lutsen/Tofte area. The Lutsen ski area has an alpine slide and mountain biking. There is also a nice bike trail along the shore in this area. Even futher north is Grand Marais which is worth a visit. The Angry Trout Cafe and Sven and Oles for pizza are always worth the drive. If you like to canoe there is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area which is amazing.

Another area south of Mpls that my son and husband are going canoing on the Root River. There is a beautiful bike trail that runs along side it which is really fun. It%26#39;s a different part of the state, but also very fun to visit. I enjoy the Amish tours in this area. Let us know your interests and it will be easier to make a suggestion.

I hit the north shore once a year - here%26#39;s some tips

head up early in the a.m.

hit Duluth around noon - catch Canal Park - lift bridge, visitors center

back on 61 and hit Two Harbors - maybe lunch at Judy%26#39;s Cafe on the main drag, check out the water front

onward to Gooseberry Falls - walk around - see the falls %26amp; trails %26amp; some of the upper trails

then to Split Rock Lighthouse %26amp; state park

then to Tettegouche State Park - walk out to Shovel Point - some of the other trails

then to Temperance River State Park - walk out to shore for one set of view, and inland along the river for others

maybe stay at AmericInn or BlueFin Bay in Tofte

consider hiking the Oberg Loop - seven scenic vistas

onward to Cascade River State Park

then the Grand Marais - Artists Point %26amp; the waterfront - many places to eat

Wonderfully detailed info from both of you and precisely what we%26#39;ll do. Thank you so much. What is best way to return to Burnsville from Grand Marais and how long will it take?

maybe 3 hrs from Burnsville to Duluth.

Duluth to Grand Marais is about 120 miles.

If you have time and are looking for a scenic drive take Hwy 23 from Finlayson to Duluth.

It may add some time to your trip (~30 minutes) but IMHO it%26#39;s well worth it for the wonderful views of the St. Louis River valley. Hwy 23 connects to I35 in the west end of Duluth, about 3-4 miles form the downtown are.

Personally, I tend to take this drive going home as no matter how many times I%26#39;ve driven into Duluth I never get sick of cresting the hill and seeing the big lake and town stretching down the shore.
