My 65 year old parents are contemplating taking the Megabus to Chicago from Minneapolis in July. I know it%26#39;s low priced but is it safe - as in does a respectable crowd ride the Megabus? Is the AC good? Is it generally on time?
I%26#39;d love any Megabus thoughts at all as I%26#39;m very unfamiliar with it. Thanks!
MegabusHi -
Megabus is just a rebranded new name for the bus line that%26#39;s been around for a long time -- Coach USA.
One of the pick-up / drop offs in Minneapolis is right by my condo - in front of the Normandy Hotel on 8th street.
Here%26#39;s info on the 2006 rebrand:

I%26#39;ve never ridden them, but would consider it for just the 7 or 8 hrs to Chicago. I would try them over Greyhound, which I did in high school for a conference.
I think the ploy is the few $1.00 seats they offer on each ride, if you get them early enough.
MegabusI also have never taken the Megabus but I see it every day picking up riders- I work right by one of the stops. From what I understand it is very affordable, and the people I see boarding the bus look like pretty nice people! I see it around the same times every day so I would assume it keeps a good schedule. These are just observations, but I hope it helps!
I%26#39;ve taken it to/fro Chicago twice in the last year and a half and am about to do it again - so it is better than tolerable. I use the downtown Mpls/3rd or 4th St. Garage stop. The first time it was late and delayed more due to people trying to bring numerous plastic tubs and laundry baskets of crap beyond their suitcases (1 suitcase, 1 carry-on) and the driver struggled to make it all fit, before letting people on the bus. It was freezing cold, very early in the morning. The crowd was very much the Greyhound bus crowd that got on at that stop. The next stop was the U of M and I had to share a seat. We stopped 1/2 way at a big old service station. I couldn%26#39;t figure out how to adjust/turn off the radio volume and I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve ever been so sick of old school classic R and B in my life! We were late getting into Chicago, but I didn%26#39;t care. On the way back, there was hardly anyone on the bus and those who were were students and the driver flipped down the DVD screens and played 2-3 movies. Awesome. On time. My second time taking it was smooth there and back, no problems at all. Those trips were in the winter so I can%26#39;t comment about the a/c. They are new buses though so I bet it%26#39;s fine. I will be taking my 3rd trip on it later this month so let me know if you want my opinion then. I think that in general, yeah it is safe - but I don%26#39;t trust anyone except the people I%26#39;m travelling with - after waking up in the middle of the night years back on a Grayhound bus and the guy across from me was going through the person in front of him%26#39;s backpack. After the 1st leg of the 1st trip I thought that no way would I subject myself to it again (waiting in the cold, a non-respectable crowd) but ever since the 2nd leg of the 1st trip I haven%26#39;t regretted it! CHEAP!
I%26#39;ve used Megabus to go to Chicago from Mpls., and thought it was good.
It was summer. The bus was properly airconditioned and resonably quiet, despite being full.
It was a nice coach, with a bathroom. There was a stop at a nice truck stop everyone could get out at in the middle of the ride, and we were on time.
I think it%26#39;s a good deal.
