We are going to be in Duluth and Hibbing for a few days starting July 4, then we want to drive north. I%26#39;ve never been to Canada so we thought we would go as far as Thunder Bay.
Any suggestions for a nice place to stay for 1 or 2 nights on the shore? Probably July 7 and 8. We prefer non-chain hotels, a view would be nice, but we are mostly going to eat and sleep, not really staying long at any one place.
I was thinking somewhere between Beaver Bay and Grand Portage, based on Google maps (I have never been there). Thanks.
where to stay on North Shore for 1-2 nights early July
I can only comment on the AmericInn %26amp; BlueFin Bay in Tofte -
I stay in that location each fall when I head up north for several nights.
You%26#39;d like either -

Hey WYLibrarian...

Great place with history. Nearby is a great state park for scenic hiking called Judge Magney :

The lodge is about 1/2 hour or so north of Grand Marais, so you can also shoot back into that town for good food and sights. Enjoy!
I just stayed at the East Bay Suites in Grand Marais and can%26#39;t wait to go back.
Their rooms are very nice, modern, clean and just right in the shore...leave the window open and you can hear the waves crashing at night. It is not a chain and the people working there were great with us.
The town is adorable and you actually have a choice to do it like the locals...small town bars etc or more upscale places to eat!
Walk around town and do some shooping...it is a great little town.
Not much to do in Thunder Bay really...Duluth is a lot nicer...but go and say you went to Canada!
Good luck and have fun!
Another vote for Bluefin Bay in Tofte!
If you head to Thunder Bay - check out the ';Niagara of the North';

Halfback - tell me more about East Bay Suites - my co-worker always mentions them - and I%26#39;ve been staying at AmericInn for years.
hot tub?
pool?
lake views?
breakfast spread?
I think I know where they are - kinda by the Holiday gas station?
Is there a nice relatively inexpensive place to stay south of Tofte..more towards Duluth?? Thanks.
Hi WYlibrarian,
Best places to stop when travelling on the north shore: Gooseberry Falls, Palisade Head rock cliffs, and Split Rock Lighthouse.
Close to Two Harbors is a great place to eat (especially to get a piece of pie) called Betty%26#39;s Pies. The place is a part of North Shore history.

Please check out The Naniboujou Lodge! You won%26#39;t be disappointed. http://www.naniboujou.com/
Great story about it%26#39;s past is also found on the website.
In Thunder Bay an interesting place to visit is Old Fort William. A beautiful falls is a short drive from Thunder Bay. Check out this site for info about entering Canada from the U.S.:
