We%26#39;ll have one free day in Minneapolis (we%26#39;ve already got the major in-town site planned).
We%26#39;d like to take one day-trip to the most northwoods-like experience that%26#39;s driveable (~1:30 away). Lake Minnetonka looks a little too developed.
Is there anything in day-trip driving range where there are trails in the woods and boat rentals on a quiet lake?
Northwoods-like Day Trip?
It%26#39;s not a lake, but if you%26#39;re looking for walking trails in the woods with canoe rental,Taylor%26#39;s Falls would fit the bill. About an hour north of Minneapolis on the St. Croix river. Not a lake but the Dalles on the St. Croix is absoutley stunning to paddle through. Riverboat trips leave every few hours too. Trails wind around the woods on both the MN and WI side of the river. Great rock bluffs and glacial potholes. Maybe take a took. Nice northwoodsy small-town feel in Taylor%26#39;s Falls.
The trails are part of Interstate State Park.
I%26#39;ll think more on it.
Northwoods-like Day Trip?
I agree - taht is where I would go too.
I would recommend Lake Maria state park. It is a 1 hour drive west of Minneapolis. …state.mn.us/state_parks/…index.html
It is heavily wooded with many hiking trails and a lake. There are boats available for rent on the weekends. I%26#39;ve been there several times on the weekends in the summer and it has never been crowded.
Check out www.exploreminnesota.com it has tons of possibilities.
I%26#39;d recommend one of these two state parks on the St. Croix River-- either Interstate in Taylors Falls / St. Croix Falls, WI (your pass gets you into state parks on both sides) or, for something closer to Minneapolis and a good add-on to historic Stillwater, MN, William O%26#39;Brien State Park. exploreminnesota.com and the Minnesota DNR web site mndnr.gov will have descriptions and details.
