I am thinking of taking the Lester River Excursion on the North Shore Scenic Railroad. My husband and I will be there beginning Aug. 15. Would the Excursion be a good way to see the lake/shore without having to rent a car?
North Shore Scenic Railroad
It would be best if you had a car or some way to get out of Duluth and up the North Shore -
so many state parks / waterfalls / hiking trails -
If this is the only opportunity to get a very small taste, I%26#39;d go for it.
You are just barely getting out of downtown Duluth.
North Shore Scenic Railroad
We took that excursion a year or two ago. It%26#39;s fun, but is more of an old train experience than a lake/shore experience.
The Lester River is still inside the Duluth city limits, so you see more houses than waves. If you want to experience the lake/shore, you need to either get further out, and travel scenic highway 61 from Duluth to Two Harbors. Or you can stroll around Canal Park, visit the Corps of Engineers museum, see if any boats are scheduled to come through, and take the Lake Walk to Fitgers.
Maybe if you took the Two Harbors excursion, which I think runs only on the weekends . . . . . .
