We are a family of four (two adults and two teens)from San Diego -- looking for the ultimate quiet, lakeside week in Minnesota. We have found what appears to be a nice cabin on the shore of Horseshoe Lake -- outside Brainerd, near Nisswa and Gull Lake.
We want to get away from the crowds of So. California -- we want some peace. We want to swim or boat and visit nice small towns. We want to sit out at night and watch the sky.
Can we get this outside of Brainerd? We%26#39;ve looked at going up to Vermillion Lake area but would rather stay a bit closer to mid-state if possible, as we%26#39;ll be visiting family in Sioux Falls and Okoboji prior to our lake week.
Honestly -- what do you think?
Will we be happy at Horseshoe Lake?
You will definitely have a quiet, lakeside week on Horseshoe. Do you know what part of the lake you would be on? There were some very shallow areas last year, due to drought...however there has been a decent amount of snow so far this winter and the water should come up in the spring.
Horseshoe is about 10 minutes from the Whitefish Chain, Nisswa, and Crosslake. I would definitely recommend staying in the Brainerd lakes area instead of going farther north to Vermillion. Horseshoe is a little smaller than 1,000 acres so if you are looking for a larger lake or being on a chain of lakes you may want to look at the Whitefish chain. If you are looking for a medium sized lake to relax on in peace and quiet (if you%26#39;re there during the week, it will be very quiet) then you will be in a great place.
I have a place on Horseshoe and can definitely answer any other questions you have.
Will we be happy at Horseshoe Lake?
Oh,dear... now we%26#39;ve gone a booked a stay up at Lake Vermillion -- at Ludlows Island in particular. Why do you think the Brainerd area is better than the Vermillion area? I appreciate your input!
I have a place on the Whitefish chain, and have also been to lake Vermillion. Vermillion is much bigger than the lakes in the Brainerd area, and much quieter. The towns are less touristy and the crowds (such that they are at either place) will be smaller. I tend to like the Brainerd area better since it is about 2 hours closer to Minneapolis than Vermillion. I suspect that you will be happy with either, but they are different experiences.
We have vacationed in the Brainerd lakes area (always on the Gull Lake chain) for about 20 years and we love it. I%26#39;m not familiar with Horseshoe lake in particular, but the area is lovely.
Ruttger%26#39;s Bay Lake Lodge is a large, gorgeous, family-owned golf resort that is located on Bay Lake just south of Deerwood, about 1/2 hour away from Brainerd. There are tons of activities for the kids as well as golf, spa and other activities for the adults. They have an indoor and outdoor pool, several different dining options, a coffeehouse, arcade, stores, marina, beach, clubhouse, etc. There are many different accommodation options such as hotel rooms, condos, cabins and the newer houses.
