What is it like to live in Anoka?

I adore halloween and always have since childhood. Today is the first time I had ever heard about a town that loves halloween as much as I and am eager to hear more about it. I come from a small town, just outside of Houston TX and since the hurricane evac, it has pushed a lot of new people into the area, thus, over populating it. More crime is arising and rude people. Its no longer the small town I remember growing up as a child and its time to move on and raise my kids elsewhere. Since I love the fall season more than any other and adore halloween, I may consider buying property here, though, I cant seem to find a whole lot of info on the town. Can anyone give me some insight? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

What is it like to live in Anoka?

Anoka is about a 30 miles north of downtown Minneapolis.

The Mississippi River is on Anoka%26#39;s southern border. The Rum River flows through Anoka flowing into the Mississippi River. Hwy 10 runs eat and west through Anoka and Hwy 169 runs norht and conects with Hwy 10 heading west.

Anoka has the ';small town'; feel, but with the newer develpoments in Coon Rapids to the east, people shop at the fancy new stores than downtown Anoka where most shops close early.

Yes, they shut down Main Street for th eannual Halloween Parade. It%26#39;s a big deal. That evening, the streets turn to costumed party goers and congregate at Serums and Billy%26#39;s Bar and Grill.

Anoka has a great classic car show every Saturday night all summer long. The historic downtown adds an extra special touch to the atmosphere as do several excellent eating establishments housed in historic buildings along Jackson Street. This really is a must see event for anyone oin the Twin Cities area.

My partner owns a home there. His ultimate goal was to be accessible distance from the cities while enjoying a country home with land. While I do enjoy going to the country home for the weekend (I live in Minneapolis), I think overall he is disappointed.

He lives in a middle class suburb and has about 2,ooo SF with 1/3 acre. He%26#39;s found it to be more ';lawless'; than he prefers. FYI, we don%26#39;t consider ourselves elitists. However, he%26#39;s experienced fewer good neighbor manners than expected. HIS neighbors love their loud dirt bikes and make lots of noise with them. The muscle cars speed through the neighborhood with no regard to the small children in the area. One has a barking dog to no end. There seem to be some regular and large yard party atmospheres, which is unusual for a residential area. And another neighbor had a rickety deck that needed replacing - he stated he was waiting for it to fall down so insurance would pay for it. Keep in mind this is only in his immediate area.

I don%26#39;t know others experiences, but we do have other friends that live there. This is only our experience. While it is the ';Halloween Capital of the World';, it only seems to wear that moniker 1x a year. I would choose your next location on research, not on the reputation of a town%26#39;s nickname. There are other small town areas here that I would consider first, MN is a great place to live. I%26#39;ve been here almost 8 years and plan to stay put. I hope I didn%26#39;t offend or burst your bubble.

Like any of the towns surrounding the Twin Cities suburbia has spread out and washed over it.

Lots of data at: www.city-data.com/city/Anoka-Minnesota.html

Note...summers aren%26#39;t quite as warm as TX but winter is a LOT colder. Even at Halloween it can be pretty chilly. Typically the first snow in the air arrives about then (but does not stick until later in Nov.). Once there is snow on the ground below zero temps are common until end of Feb.

Note: There is a high probability this thread may be closed or removed per site policy on moving to a place. Questions like this are better phrased as ';extended visit'; and don%26#39;t mention buying property. ;)

Anoka has more winter than fall :)
