Hearty breakfast downtown?

Any suggestions for a hearty breakfast downtown? I will be staying @ the Hilton. Also are there any liquor stores downtown?

Thanks!

Hearty breakfast downtown?

Hell%26#39;s Kitchen restaurant is virtually next door on 10th Street. If you%26#39;re interested in venturing out for breakfast, Al%26#39;s Diner is in the University area (a few miles away) and is a local landmark.

Haskell%26#39;s Liquor is a block away on 9th Street.

Hearty breakfast downtown?

Hell%26#39;s Kitchen is a good suggestion, esp. because of proximity.

Another option is Ike%26#39;s brunch, which is spendy but huge. A little easier to fit in there, too, as Hell%26#39;s Kitchen is usually crowded. At least the half dozen times I%26#39;ve been there.

My favorite breakfast in Minneapolis is Whitey%26#39;s on Hennepin across the river from downtown in Northeast. Would require a (short/$5)cab, though.

And I can%26#39;t argue with Al%26#39;s either. It%26#39;s an institution, but also requires a (longer) cab ride from downtown.

I think Hell%26#39;s Kitchen is great for breakfast, but I don%26#39;t remember it being hearty... it%26#39;s been a while for me.

However, Keys Cafe at 114 S. 9th St is know for great food and large portions. It%26#39;s a little greasy, but a great local institution.

There are other great places I%26#39;d recommend, but they%26#39;re not walking distance. Let us know if that interests you.

Key%26#39;s Cafe is great....all their locations. In Minneapolis at 114 S. 9th St. www.keyscafe.com large portions of home cooking and fresh baked items.

While there may be some small liquor stores or shops downtown it might be well worth a short bus trip up Hennepin Ave. to Surdyk%26#39;s Liqour and Cheese Shop. An amazing place with HUGE selection of everything (Liqour, beer, wine, etc...). Actually on a nice day it might not be a bad walk but bus might be faster. Buses 4, 6 or 61 on Hennepin Ave. and it it within (just barely) the 50 cent downtown zone. Ask bus driver to tell you where to exit at....303 Hennepin Ave. and 3rd St. should be the end of the downtown zone. From 7th %26amp; Hennepin downtown it would be only about 1.2 miles...just across the river and Nicollet Island. www.surdyks.com

One caution on the Liqour store part...by law in MN liqour stores are closed on Sunday and in Minneapolis close at 9pm except 10pm Fri-Sat..

Hell%26#39;s Kitchen is great - be SURE to call in a reservation or you%26#39;ll be waiting outside in the cold.

They are moving later this year to a larger location (the old Rossi%26#39;s).

If this is over the weekend - Ike%26#39;s has awesome Sat %26amp; Sun buffet breakfast - made to order omelettes - and drinks.

Near the Hilton is Haskells and TEAM Liquors for liquor stores - note that liquor stores are closes on Sundays in MN. There%26#39;s a two story Target close by for mixes %26amp; snacks.

It should be pointed out that Surdyk%26#39;s is VERY close to Whitey%26#39;s. For what it%26#39;s worth.

By the way, I only took the word ';hearty'; to mean big portions. If you%26#39;re talking a more literal meaning of the word, let me know. Whitey%26#39;s is huge portions, your standard breakfast items only better than other places in a casual, unrushed atmosphere (so many places need table turnover so bad you feel like they%26#39;re trying to get you out as soon as you sit.).

And the fresh squeezed OJ and grapefruit juice is like nectar.

Thanks so much for the great suggestions and info! I can%26#39;t wait to get there next Saturday--it%26#39;s 90 degrees here in San Antonio and I am soooo ready for nice cool weather!

it%26#39;s rainy and 52F right now - weather could be hit or miss.

If you are at the hilton, there is a liqour store a couple blocks down in a strip mall with a BP gas station. Ask the front desk people, it is the nearest gas station to that hotel. The liqour store is right by The King and I Thai resturant (my favorite!) and also The Millenium hotel (where I got married). Lotus and a dry cleaning place is in the same strip mall too.

I think Hell%26#39;s kitchen is very good. The bread is like heaven.
